Japan’s Most Visited: Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. In Hyogo Prefecture, this is Japan’s largest and most visited castle. The castle is renowned for its intricate wooden structure and unique defense system comprising multiple gates, winding paths, and hidden rooms. Himeji Castle is a sight that was close to home for many years while I lived in the city. The intricate details of the castle’s architecture still amaze me.

Matsumoto Castle is One Of Japan’s Remaining Original Castle

Matsumoto Castle, located in Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s remaining few original castles. It is also known as the Crow Castle due to its black exterior.

Matsumoto Castle is unique because it has a secondary donjon, or keep, used to store weapons and ammunition. The castle also features a moon-viewing deck and a turret with a secret escape route.

I visited Matsumoto Castle during the cherry blossom season, and the contrast between the pink blossoms and the black castle was breathtaking.
